Southeast Arizona is one of the premier birding destinations in the United States. The mountain ranges of this region, such as the Chiricahuas and Huachucas, are home to numerous mostly-Mexican species that enter the US only in this small region. Many desert birds found more widely in the Southwest are also common here, and rare riparian areas and desert grasslands are home to even more species. Commonly-saught birds of the region include the Elegant Trogon, Red-faced Warbler, Painted Redstart, Montezuma Quail, Gray Hawk, Buff-breasted Flycatcher, Rose-throated Becard, Sulphur-bellied Flycatcher, White-eared Hummingbird, and Violet-crowned Hummingbird. Rarer species that occasionally cross the border from Mexico into this region include Berylline Hummingbird, Plain-capped Starthroat, Flame-colored Tanager, and Eared Quetzal.
